Security: Obaseki finalises documentation, audit of Edo forests, to begin recruitment of forest police

L-R: Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq; Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; Edo State Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro; Commander, 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier Gen. Sani Abdullahi, and Commander, 107 Air Maritime Group, Air Commodore Olasunkanmi Abidoye, during a special security meeting, at the Government House, in Benin City, on Monday, August 1st, 2022.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the government has finalized the documentation and audit of the state’s forests and is embarking on the recruitment of new forest police as part of a renewed effort to enhance security across the state.

Obaseki disclosed this at a Special Security Council Meeting with relevant stakeholders in Edo South Senatorial District, held at the Government House, Benin City.

The governor held similar meetings with stakeholders in Edo North and Edo Central Senatorial District to review security strategies and mechanisms to tackle insecurity in Edo.

Obaseki said the government in partnership with relevant stakeholders is strengthening the security architecture and adopting various measures to sustain security in the state, including bush combing, registration of motorbikes and marketplaces, signing of the anti-grazing laws, and residents’ registration, among others.

He said, “The responsibility of any government in any society is to guarantee the security and safety of the people. No government can call itself a government if it cannot protect and secure the lives of the people that it oversees.

“That is why for us in Edo, given what is going on in the country today, we have decided that security is now our number one priority. In the area of our forests, we have completed documentation and audit of all our forests in Edo State, particularly in Edo South.

“We have done a flyover of all our forests and as we speak, we have set up a new forestry commission. Our forestry laws that have not been updated in more than 50 years now have been updated. And part of the provisions of the law is that we will now re-energize the institution of forest guards.”

The governor added, “We are currently in discussion with the Federal Ministry of Environment and some other stakeholders to begin the recruitment of the first set of the new forest police as we will call them to support the activities of all the other security agencies.”

On strengthening local governments to support the government’s efforts at sustaining security across the state, Obaseki noted, “In terms of squatters in markets, we are going to enforce the local government laws which stipulate that it is only the local government that is entitled to register markets and shut down illegal markets.”

“Any place where trading is currently taking place today and such a place has not been registered will be immediately shut down,” the governor warned.

LEAVE NOW ALIVE OR LEAVE AS A CORPSE

Many have died pretending all is well whilst wishing, hoping and praying for a better tomorrow.
I don’t want to “die” or go inexplicably “missing”.

I sincerely and publicly apologize for living a lie these past years.True to random speculations, there has been trouble in my “perceived paradise”.For the 2nd time in 2years, I am here again on social media boldly declaring that I am done with my marriage. My long overdue/relentless stance on this is of course no news to Austin Faani, the doctors and my parents.

If push comes to shove & suddenly i am incommunicado; my lawyers, the welfare department and the Nigerian police force have my testimonials in recorded video clips/statements set for public release on all social media apps and national newspapers.

US Supreme Court rules in favour of coach’s on-field prayers

The United States Supreme Court has ruled in favour of a public high school football coach who sought to kneel and pray on the field after games.

In a 6-3 ruling along ideological lines on Monday, the court’s conservative justices said the coach’s prayer was protected by the First Amendment in a decision that could strengthen the acceptance of religious practices in public school settings.

“The Constitution and the best of our traditions counsel mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote for the majority.

The ruling was the latest in a string of cases at the highest US court that dealt with religion, and comes amid a wider ideological shift to the right that included the overturning of federal abortion rights last week.

“The Constitution and the best of our traditions counsel mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote for the majority.

The ruling was the latest in a string of cases at the highest US court that dealt with religion, and comes amid a wider ideological shift to the right that included the overturning of federal abortion rights last week

Last the week, the court ruled that Maine cannot exclude religious schools from a programme that offers public funding to aid tuition at some private schools. On May 2, it backed a Christian group that sought to fly a flag emblazoned with a cross at Boston City Hall.

The ruling announced on Monday involved Joseph Kennedy, a Christian and former football coach at Bremerton High School in Bremerton, Washington state.

Kennedy, as a coach, had prayed regularly on the field and was voluntarily joined by players.

Concerned about being sued for violating students’ religious freedom rights, the school asked Kennedy to stop his practice of kneeling and praying while still “on duty” as a coach after the game.

Despite the school trying to work out a solution so Kennedy could pray privately before or after the game, he continued to kneel and pray on the field.  The school put him on paid leave.

The San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals last year ruled against Kennedy, finding that local officials would have violated the First Amendment’s ban on government establishment of religion if they let his actions continue.

The competition is part of activities lined up by the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) in preparation of Nigerian athletes for the World Championship in Oregon, USA as well as the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

The trials held between 23rd and 25th June, 2022, with the state showcasing its world-class facilities at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to the over 1000 top athletes from the country and beyond, who clinched tickets for the global tournaments.

The state government undertook a massive reconstruction of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in furtherance of the government’s unprecedented investment in sports. The stadium hosts a main bowl, an ultra-modern Olympic-sized swimming pool, indoor sports hall, a new four-in-one tennis court and spectators’ stands, a two-storey secretariat building, a squash court, weightlifting and Para-powerlifting halls, which is attached to the main bowl, and a suspended gymnasium hall for weightlifting, kickboxing and boxing, among other facilities.

The state has since then become a sporting hub and home of global competitions, playing host to various national and international tourneys including the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival; Olympics Trials; Nigeria’s Women Football League, the Super Six Tournament; the Aiteo Cup for male and female categories and the Group L 2021 AFCON Qualifier between Nigeria and Sierra Leone, among others.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, some of the athletes commended the state government for its huge investment in sports, which they noted has placed the state ahead of others in terms of sports development.

A U.S.-based Nigerian athlete, who participated in the trials, Jude Nwafor said he was quite impressed with the world-class facilities at the stadium, hailing the government for paying critical attention to sports in the state.

He said, “The facilities at the stadium are of global standards, which is quite impressive. This is an affirmation that the government acknowledges the role of sports for youth development and job creation and is deeply concerned about harnessing the potential of its youthful population using sports. This is very commendable and should be a shining example to other subnationals.”

On his part, a resident and convener of the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Esan Agenda, Mr. Akhere Obozele, commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for the investment in sporting infrastructure in the state, noting that “today, Edo has become a sporting hub and has continued to play host to numerous national and international competitions.”

He added, “Apart from the upgrade of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, the state has constructed 20 other mini stadia across the state, leveraging the sporting potential of the state to drive job creation and socioeconomic development. We must commend the governor and urge him not to relent on his mission of transforming the fortunes of Edo State through investment in all sectors of the state’s economy.”

I received briefs from eyewitnesses in the community and assured the troubled community that the assailants will be brought to book and made to pay for their crimes.”

He continued: “We are pained by the loss of both the reverend father and the member of the vigilante group, who was killed but I am particularly happy with our youth and the vigilante group and the hunters. “We will also look at what has happened here critically because Edo State has been relatively peaceful. We will not allow these miscreants to come into our state and disrupt the peace that we’re already enjoying. Edo will be too hot for them. We will assess what has happened to know how to correct them,” Shaibu noted.

He implored the community to partner with the Police and charged anyone taking actions to work within the ambits of the law to ensure that they do not run afoul of the law.
