Abiwumi Owoade, the wife of the Alaafin of Oyo, urged the government on Wednesday to empower women, especially those in rural areas. She pledged her family’s full support for initiatives aimed at this cause.
Owoade also assured that her husband, Oba Akeem Owoade, is committed to supporting efforts that empower women and enhance their economic opportunities.
According to a statement from the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, Owoade emphasized the vital role women play in promoting societal development, both within households and at the national level.
She said: “As women, we serve as a dynamic force for change. Many have displayed remarkable ingenuity and creativity in overcoming challenges, whether within their families or society at large, thereby creating an environment conducive for democracy and governance to thrive.”
Mrs Owoade noted that with Nigeria’s female population currently estimated at 55 million, their empowerment is integral to national progress.
“It is indisputable that empowering women equates to empowering the nation. Women are indispensable to a country’s development,” she stated.
“A wise woman builds her home, while a foolish one tears it down. A woman plays a fundamental role in nurturing godly children and ensuring their proper upbringing. She is expected to be a trusted confidant and a valuable adviser to her husband,” she added.
Owoade, however, urged women to exercise restraint in moments of provocation, warning that careless words could have lasting consequences.
“Even if you are the one paying all the bills, control your tongue when angered. You cannot devalue your household and expect to rebuild it effortlessly,” she cautioned.
She urged the government at all levels to create more opportunities for women’s empowerment, particularly in rural areas, through awareness campaigns and policy initiatives.
