London, U.K. – July 13, 2025 — Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died in the United Kingdom following a brief illness, his family has confirmed.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, passed away in a private clinic in London. He was 81 years old.
In a brief statement released by his family early Sunday, they said:
“We announce with deep sorrow the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Muhammadu Buhari, who died peacefully in London after a brief illness. We ask for privacy during this time of mourning.”
The late president had frequently traveled to the UK for medical care during and after his presidency. His latest visit, which had been kept largely private, took place just weeks ago.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari rose to national prominence as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 after toppling the civilian government in a coup. He was later democratically elected as president three decades later, becoming the first Nigerian to defeat an incumbent president at the polls.
Throughout his tenure, Buhari was known for his anti-corruption stance, tough security policies, and controversial economic reforms. Supporters hailed his discipline and integrity, while critics often questioned his handling of Nigeria’s economy and internal conflicts.
Tributes have begun to pour in from Nigerian leaders, political figures, and citizens. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who succeeded Buhari in 2023, is expected to address the nation later today.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in coordination with the Nigerian government.
This is a developing story.
