Speaking on the state of Nollywood today, Ozokwor compared the new generation of actors to her time in the industry. According to her, talent and hard work used to be the defining factors for success.
“In our days, Nollywood actors and actresses relied on talent and hard work, not expósing their bodies. People like Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade, Liz Benson, and Nkiru Sylvanus proved that beauty and skill could go hand in hand.”
The legendary actress, who has graced the screen for decades, expressed worry that acting roles are now being determined by appearance rather than skill.
“Many roles are no longer about talent but about bódy shape. Producers also play a part in this. Like Kanayo O Kanayo said, the truth must be told.”
Despite her criticism, Ozokwor made it clear that her concern comes from a place of love and hope for the younger generation of Nollywood stars.
“I just hope this new generation does better, the way a mother wishes well for her children,” she added.
Talent vs. Appearance in Nollywood
Patience Ozokwor’s statement has reignited conversations among Nollywood fans and industry observers about the evolving standards of success in Nigeria’s film industry. While many agree that Nollywood has grown in popularity and global recognition, critics argue that the focus on appearance over talent could affect the depth and quality of storytelling.
Ozokwor joins the list of veterans, including Kanayo O. Kanayo, who have repeatedly called for Nollywood to return to its roots by prioritizing skill, discipline, and strong narratives over superficial trends.
A Mother’s Advice to Nollywood
As one of the most respected figures in the industry, Ozokwor’s words carry weight. Her message reflects the wisdom of experience and the care of a mother figure who wishes the best for the future of Nollywood.
With her statement now sparking reactions, fans and stakeholders alike are asking: Will Nollywood’s new generation rise to the challenge of putting talent above trends?
