Presidency Knocks Amaechi Over Claims On Nigeria Tax Act 2025

Olusegun Dada, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, has accused former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, of spreading propaganda and misleading Nigerians about the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Dada described Amaechi as a “manipulator-in-chief,” alleging that the former minister has continued to “insult the intelligence of Nigerians” since leaving office under the administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari.

‘Falsehoods’ On Tax Reform

Dada took particular aim at Amaechi’s comments on the Tax Reform Act, accusing him of deliberately distorting the provisions of the legislation.

He stated:

“From mocking the poor people of Nigeria with his ‘I am hungry’ comments at the peak of the reforms, to blackmailing them to go on the streets to protest and now misinforming them on the Tax Reform Act, Amaechi has become notorious for insulting the intelligence of Nigerians.”

Key Provisions of Nigeria Tax Act 2025

According to Dada, the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 — which takes effect in January 2026 — introduces progressive personal income tax rates ranging from 0% to 25%.

He explained that:

  • Nigerians earning ₦800,000 or less annually will pay no personal income tax under the new law.

  • The 25% top rate applies only to ultra-high incomes between ₦50 million and ₦100 million annually, depending on tax bands.

Dada dismissed claims that the reform would lead to an automatic 25% deduction from bank accounts or building material transactions, describing such assertions as “desperate propaganda.”

“No automatic 25 per cent grab from bank accounts or building material deals. Too many smart Nigerians are on board with these reforms and we have no doubts that they aren’t buying your desperate propaganda,” he said.

Presidency Vows Public Enlightenment

The presidential aide maintained that the Presidency would continue to educate Nigerians on the reforms, regardless of the political weight of those criticising the policy.

“Very quickly, we will bury retrogressive politics like these in the near future so we can focus, as a nation, on building a formidable economy that will compete among the comity of nations,” Dada added.
