A grassroots fundraising initiative in Yobe State has generated about N188 million in pledges and donations to support the governorship ambition of Ahmad Lawan ahead of the 2027 elections.
The fundraiser, held in Damaturu on Sunday, attracted contributions from a wide range of residents, signalling strong local backing for the former Senate President’s potential bid under the All Progressives Congress.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Lawan expressed appreciation to the Coalition of Yobe East Progressive Youths, led by Dr Mohammed Yerima, for organising the initiative.
He described the effort as a reflection of “responsible citizenship” and a new model of grassroots political participation.
Preliminary reports indicate that the funds were raised through pledges, cash donations, and bank transfers into a dedicated account with Sterling Bank.
Lawan highlighted that the most remarkable aspect of the exercise was the volume of small donations—ranging from ₦100 to ₦3,000—contributed by widows, apprentices, traders, and students.
“That, to me, is the true definition of grassroots participation and community ownership. You have not only raised funds for forms; you have redefined what it means to be progressive citizens of Yobe State,” he said.
He added that the initiative represents a collective investment in a vision for transparent and accountable governance.
“My desire to serve is to answer the call of our people. May Allah continue to guide us in this endeavour,” Lawan stated.
