Oghede, Edo State – Residents of Oghede community in Edo State are raising the alarm over what they describe as the Nigerian Army’s abuse of power, alleging the destruction of homes and properties in the name of barracks expansion.

According to eyewitness reports and community leaders, soldiers stormed the area without prior notice, demolishing buildings and declaring that vast portions of land—even those several miles away from the barracks—now belong to the Nigerian Army.

“This is nothing but oppression and bullying,” one community member said. “Even if the Army has claims to the land, is this the lawful way to act? Shouldn’t there be procedures like serving notice, engaging the state government, or having community dialogue?”

The incident has sparked outrage, with calls growing louder for government intervention. The community is appealing directly to the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to step in and protect citizens from what they describe as “military aggression.”
“I am calling on the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Defence Staff to take immediate action,” said another concerned resident. “Our people are crying. This is not just about land, it’s about justice and human dignity.”
As of press time, the Nigerian Army has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
The situation remains tense as community members demand accountability, a legal process, and protection from further military action.
This is a developing story.
