Tragedy struck on Wednesday during the 100 days in office celebration of Senator Monday Okpebholo at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the Edo State capital, as an elderly man slumped and died.
The incident occurred at about 5:08 pm during the praise and worship session, which was part of the jamboree lined up to mark Okpebholo’s
Witnesses said the man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, collapsed suddenly during the event at the stadium and died before he could get medical help.
Some attendees at the event however blamed the man’s death on the event’s organizers for insufficient preparation, alleging that the medical response was poorly coordinated and delayed, which may have contributed to the man’s death.
One eyewitness said, “We were celebrating, and then an elderly man slumped and died. There was no immediate help, and the situation became somehow chaotic. Part of the reasons for the man’s death should be put on organizers for not having enough medical personnel on standby.”
