The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from his position following a directive issued by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The resignation was confirmed on Monday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
Tuggar’s decision comes in compliance with the president’s order requiring all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to step down on or before March 31.
President Tinubu based the directive on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the polls.
The development follows growing speculation about Tuggar’s interest in the 2027 Bauchi State governorship race under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A seasoned diplomat and policymaker, Tuggar was appointed minister in August 2023. Born on March 12, 1967, he has built a distinguished career spanning diplomacy, politics, energy, and strategic consulting.
He previously served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011, representing the Gamawa Constituency in Bauchi State, and has contested the state’s governorship in past election cycles.
Between 2017 and 2023, Tuggar served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany, where he played a key role in strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing trade cooperation, and promoting Nigeria’s interests in Europe.
As Minister of Foreign Affairs, he led Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements under the Tinubu administration.
